Shomari Wiltshire, Nicholas Verway, Michael Alphonso and Avery Arjoon will compete for Gold in the 2022 Junior Area Squash Association (CASA) Championship today following respective semi-final wins yesterday at the Georgetown Club Facility, Camp Street, and the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue.
Wiltshire defeated Matthew Elliott (Bermuda) 11-2, 11-1 and 11-3 in the semi-final stage of the Boys U19 section. He will now meet Darien Benn (Barbados) in the final after the latter defeated Samuel Ince-Carvahal.
On the other hand, Verwey and Alphonso will contest the Boys U17 final following semi-final wins. Verwey defeated Seth Thong (T&T) 11-8, 11-3, and 11-6, whilst Alphonso defeated Alex Stewart (Barbados) 3-11, 11-8, 11-8, and 11-9.
In the Girls U13 section, Arjoon defeated Tiana Gomes 11-7, 11-7, and 11-0 to set up a championship match with Josie Thong (T&T).
Meanwhile, Abosaide Cadogan lost to Sumairaa Suleman (Barbados) in the semi-final round of the Girls U19 division 11-9, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8, and 11-9. Similarly, Safirah Sumner lost to Mehar Trehan (Jamaica) 11-8, 4-11, 3-11, and 6-11 in her U15 semi-final encounter.
The individual championships conclude today.
The team championships will start tomorrow, following the official opening ceremony of the tournament.
The team championships will continue on Thursday and Friday, before the actual final which is penciled in for Saturday. The sponsors of the competition include the Guyana Olympic Association, MVP Sports, John Fernandes Ltd, Bounty Farms, Digicel, E-Networks, and the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport.
