Shomari Wiltshire, Nicholas Verwey, and Avery Arjoon won gold medals in the Boys U19, Boys U17 and Girls U13 divisions respectively when the Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Individual Championships ended yesterday at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, and the Georgetown Club facility, Camp Street.
Wiltshire dismantled Darien Benn (Barbados) in straight sets 11-6, 11-5, and 11-5 while Verwey defeated countryman Michael Alphonso 10-12, 11-3, 11-7, and 11-6. Meanwhile, Arjoon overcame Josie Thong 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, and 11-9.
Kirsten Gomes lost a hard fought Girls U19 final to Sumairaa Suleman (Barbados) 11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 4-11, and 9-11.
Meanwhile, Samuel Ince-Carvahal defeated Matthew Elliott (Bermuda) 11-3, 11-2 and 11-2 in the Boys U19 third place playoff while Abosaide Cadogan defeated Chloe Walcott (T&T) 11-5, 11-6 and 11-6 to walk away with the bronze medal in the Girls U19 division.
Likewise, Tiana Gomes defeated McKenna Kyme (Bermuda) 11-6, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9 and 11-6 in the Girls U13 third place playoff whilst Safirah Sumner defeated Rose Paulos (Bermuda) 11-2, 11-7 and 11-7 to clinch the bronze medal in the Girls U15 section.
The team championships will start today, following the official opening ceremony of the tournament. The team section will continue from tomorrow through Friday, before the actual final which is penciled for Saturday.
The sponsors of the competition include the Guyana Olympic Association, MVP Sports, John Fernandes Ltd, Bounty Farms, Digicel, E-Networks, and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
