Guyana reclaimed the overall title at the conclusion of the 2022 Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships yesterday, after clinching the boys and girls’ team crowns respectively following unbeaten campaigns in both divisions.
It was Guyana’s first overall championship since 2015 after surrendering the 2017 and 2019 editions to Barbados. The accomplishment was also Guyana’s 13th overall title, following a streak of 12 consecutive crowns, which was ended by the Barbadians.
In the boy’s section, Guyana downed Barbados 4-1 to complete a flawless 5-0 campaign. Shiloh Asregado crushed Jules O’Garro 11-2, 11-1, and 11-4, whilst Shomari Wiltshire overcame Darien Benn 8-11, 11-6, 11-4, and 11-7, Nicholas Verwey defeated Alex Stewart 11-9, 11-9, and 11-8, and Samuel Ince-Carvahal brushed aside Luke Wilson 11-3, 11-6, and 11-7. Brenno DaSilva lost to Daniel Sealy 8-11, 1-11, and 2-11
In the Girl’s division, Guyana defeated Jamaica 3-2 to complete a perfect 5-0 record. Kirsten Gomes defeated Mia Todd 11-7, 11-4, 7-11, and 14-12, while Abosaide Cadogan defeated Savannah Thomson 9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 13-11, and 11-6.
However, Guyana suffered defeats in the form of Rylee Rodrigues and Safirah Sumner. Rodrigues lost to Katherine Risden 0-11, 2-11, and 2-11, while Safirah Sumner went down to Mehar Trehan 7-11, 6-11, 11-4, and 4-11.
Nonetheless, Guyana secured the win, and the divisional title, as Avery Arjoon won via default.
