Slingerz FC maintained their perfect record in the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Senior Men’s League, defeating fellow unbeaten outfit Pouderoyen 6-3 in a top-of-the-table clash on Friday evening at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Pouderoyen FC took the lead compliments of Devin Gaskin in the 16th minute who raced onto a through pass before slotting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper into the far corner from inside the penalty box.
However, the lead proved to be short-lived as Slingerz FC responded through Jamal Perreira one minute later, slotting home from the left side of the 18-yard area, after receiving a right-sided cross
.The Vergenoegen-based outfit then took the lead in the 42nd minute as Delon Lanferman directed his powerful header from just inside the centre of the box, into the left corner, after latching onto a left-sided cross.
A goalkeeping error in the 45th+1 minute led to a Deon Alfred conversion as a left-footed strike 28 yards from goal in the centre of the field from the aforesaid forward, bounced over the hands of the diving goalkeeper and settled into the lower right corner.
Pouderoyen then reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the 45th+2 minute when Chad Matthews directed his flicked-on header from inside the centre of the penalty area with his back to the goal past the advancing goalkeeper, after latching onto a lobbed pass.
Upon the resumption, Pouderoyen equalised in the 52nd minute as Matthews recorded his double from the penalty mark. Awarded the spot-kick following a clumsy challenge on Stephon Jupiter inside the left of the 18-yard area, Matthews made no mistake from the distance as he fired his right-footed effort into the top right corner.
However, three conversions in the space of 15 minutes propelled Slingerz FC to the vital three points. Lanferman made his presence felt once more in the 75th minute, receiving a right-sided cross inside the left of the penalty area, before turning and smashing the ball into the left corner.
Another goalkeeping blunder handed Slingerz FC a 5-2 advantage one minute onward, as a right-sided cross was inexplicably pushed into the path of the onrushing Dexroy Adams by the diving goalkeeper who opted against catching the ball, allowing the forward to slam his effort into the left corner unchallenged.
The contest was then sealed in the 90th minute, as Leo Lovell scored, after his right-footed free-kick from outside the left of the penalty area, took a deflection off a defender inside the wall and settled into the right corner, after wrong-footing the onrushing goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Den Amstel and Uitvlugt played a scoreless affair in the first fixture. The tournament continues at the same venue today with another doubleheader.
