A driver is currently in police custody after a labourer was fatally struck on the pickup he was driving on the Onderneeming Public Road.
Dead is Lincoln Moore of Onderneeming Sandpit, Region Two.
The incident occurred yesterday around 7:30 am on the Onderneeming Sandpit road.
According to information, Moore was an occupant of pickup GJJ 8947 and was sitting on the back tray while the driver was passing under a steel bar at the toll gate at Onderneeming. The driver heard an impact from the rear of the vehicle and stopped.
Upon checking, Moore was lying motionless in the tray of the vehicle bleeding from his head. It appeared that he had hit his head on the steel bar.
“We heard the impact when we came out we saw the guy in a pool of blood, he had head injuries,” an eyewitness told this newspaper.
The driver then drove to the Suddie Public Hospital. However, Moore was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor at the hospital. His body is currently at the Suddie Mortuary awaiting a post- mortem examination.
According to the deceased’s mother, Parbattie Sooklall, she received the tragic news yesterday morning.
“I get a call that he get knock at the toll gate. He was with his bossman”, she said.
The eighty-year-old mother from Adventure Village said that she saw him early yesterday morning before he left to go to work. She said that she is currently sickly and her son would support her financially.
