Crane Rovers and Wales FC secured identical 2-1 victories when the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Senior Men’s League continued yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Crane squeaked past #1 All-Stars. Alonzo Bowman pushed Crane ahead in the 40th minute, converting a penalty kick right footed attempt into the right corner. The scoreline would remain unchanged heading into the halftime interval.
However, Kevin Spearman levelled proceedings in the 67th minute, slotting home from inside the left of the box, after an initial cross from the right side was deflected into his onrushing path following an attempted clearance by the defender.
Nevertheless, Donsford Williams crafted what proved to be the winner in the 86th minute, directing a powerful header through the hands of the goalkeeper into the back of the net, after latching onto a cross from the right side.
Meanwhile, Wales overcame Belle West. Following a scoreless first half period, Lexroy Mansfield handed Wales the lead, as he broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. Awarded a free-kick at the top of the 18-yard box, Mansfield uncorked a flat strike which slipped under the jumping defensive wall and rolled past the goalkeeper into the back of the net.
Wales then doubled their advantage six minutes later in the form of Daniel Alves. The opportunity emanated from the penalty mark and Alves converted into the left hand corner with a right foot strike.
Belle West would eventually record a consolation goal in the 84th minute when Paul Singh scored, cutting inside from the flank, before uncorking an effort which went through his grasp of the goalkeeper and settled into the back of the net. The tournament continues at the same venue on Friday.
