The body of a woman who was reported missing in Mahdia, Region 8 (Potaro-Sipuruni) was found a day after her disappearance with metal objects in her abdomen.
The murdered woman has been identified as 55-year-old Nariman Latifan of Salbora Backdam, Mahdia and also of Lima Dam, Essequibo Coast.
According to reports, on July 5th at about 11:00hrs, the woman’s reputed husband went to the Regional Police Head-quarters, Mahdia, and reported that he left Latifan at their home at Salbora Backdam, and went to a work area, approximately 25 minutes away from their home, seeking gold. The reputed husband said he returned home at about 3 pm and alleged that he saw someone peeping at him from behind the house. Paying no heed, he made his way into the house. As he entered, he called out for his reputed wife but received no answer.
The inside of the house appeared to be ransacked and his wife’s hammock was chopped down. The man said he ran out from the house, onto the access trail and made his way to the Police Headquarters where a missing person’s report was filed. At about 5.15 pm on the said date, a party of policemen visited the scene and a search was carried out both inside and outside the house. During the search, spots of what appeared to be blood were seen on the floor of the verandah. In what looked like an old mining pit located some 100 yards behind the house, the search party uncovered what appeared to be human intes-tines. At that time, Latifan’s body had still not been found.
The organ was uplifted and transported to Mahdia’s Dis-trict Hospital where it was examined by a doctor and positively identified as human intestines. It was then placed in the hospital’s mortuary for storage. On July 7th, the day after the woman’s body was found, a post-mortem examination was performed and two metal objects were removed from her abdomen. No report was provided as to where the body was found or by whom. The cause of death was given as ligature strangulation compounded by blunt trauma to the head. The police said that further investigations are ongoing and they are pursuing a suspect who might have left the scene shortly after the incident.
