STR Wood Inc became the latest entity to throw its financial support behind the Guyana national chess team by donating $500,000 towards their participation at the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad to be hosted in Chennai, India.
This was disclosed in an official release from the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF). According to the correspondence, the local governing body expressed its sincere gratitude to the company for its contribution, adding that the team will now be able to focus on their preparation for the event.
The team to compete in India from July 28 to August 10 comprises Candidate Master, Taffin Khan; Fide Master, Anthony Drayton; Ethan Lee, Roberto Neto, Loris Nathoo, Sasha Shariff, Pooja Lam, Anaya Lall, Jessica Callender and Nellisha Johnson.
“STR Wood Inc. specializes in the harvesting and production of all species of wood used in construction, bridge building, utility poles, and the making of furniture. STR Wood is an associate of STR Group. The Group, through its associate companies, has been a proud sponsor of chess tournaments over the years, especially in the junior categories, in an effort to ensure chess remains accessible to Guyana’s youth,” the release added.
