Lance Corporal Rickland Edmondson, the policeman who was assaulted after trying to apprehend an alleged errant driver, has lost his right eye as a result of the attack.
The Guyana Police Force on Friday reported that Regional Division #3 Commander Mahendra Siwnarine confirmed the loss of Edmondson’s eye.
He had been admitted as a patient at the St Joseph Mercy Hospital following the attack, which took place on July 16, when his alleged assailant, Daniel Singh, threw a brick that hit him in the right eye.
Singh was charged with felonious wounding on Wednesday and released on $400,000 bail.
Singh, called ‘Anand’, 22, a labourer of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, had appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
Singh was not required to plead to the charge, bail was granted and he was asked to return to court on August 17.
The police had said the attack occurred last Saturday at about 18:15 hrs at Anna Catherina.
According to the police, Edmondson, who is stationed at the Anna Catherina Police Station, was on traffic patrol duty in the vicinity of Anna Catherina with a force motor cycle when he observed Singh, the driver of a white Canter, GDD 5340, acting in a suspicious manner.
As a result, he stopped the Canter and asked Singh to produce his licence and other relevant documents.
The police said Singh drove away and Edmondson pursued him, apprehending him at his residence in Anna Catherina. There, the police said, Singh’s father and sister allegedly grabbed hold of Edmond-son and the driver picked up a brick and threw it at Edmondson, hitting him in his right eye.
They then went into their house and secured it.
Edmondson was then taken by the ranks of the Police Anti-Crime Patrol to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor on duty and was then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital before being admitted to the private St Joseph Mercy Hospital.
