The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) yesterday received the sum of one and a half million dollars to assist it with its participation at the Chess Olympiad which gets underway next week in India.
The sum was promised to the GCF at an earlier meeting last month when the Head-of-State met with members of the Guyana team to the Olympiad along with members of the GCF executive.
Yesterday Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle duly presented the cheque to GCF president Frankie Farley.
“We presented 1.5 million dollars to the chess federation to assist in participating at the Chess Olympiad in India,” Ninvalle told Stabroek Sports yesterday.
“This was a promise made by His Excellency Dr Irfaan Ali. He promised them that he would assist them,” he added.
At the meeting in July, which was also attended by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jnr., Marcia Lee, Irshad Mohammed, Davion Mars, Yolander Sammy and Sabine Mc Intosh, President Ali had expressed his pleasure with the fact that 12 year old Anya Lall, who has a disability, was on the Guyana team.
