Le Repentir Cemetery is running out of space, Mayor Ubraj Narine yesterday said at a statutory meeting of the City Council.
He said that correspondence and a plan were sent to President Irfaan Ali requesting access to additional lands but no response has been received.
He noted that the burial ground is not palled-off which is resulting in parts surrounded by the canal breaking away. This has resulted in some tombs falling into the canal.
For years the City Council has been criticised for the appalling state of the city’s main cemetery. It is often flooded and members of the public have not been able to find tombs of their loved ones. In some parts of the cemetery burial parties have to navigate mud and bush before they arrive at their location.
