An East Canje, Berbice businessman was discovered dead with a stab wound in his back in his kitchen yesterday morning and the police say a suspect has confessed.
Dead is Vickram Seubarran, 53, of Lot 135 Number Two Village. Seubarran also known as “Vick”, operated Universal DVD Club and Stationery Solutions located in New Amsterdam.
Commander of Region Six, Boodnarine Persaud last evening confirmed that three persons were in custody and one had confessed to the man’s murder.
Relatives yesterday said that the front door to the lower flat of the man’s house was locked while the back door was wide open at the time his body was discovered.
His brother, Dean Seubarran yesterday told Stabroek News that the deceased was discovered by a female relative who acts as a caretaker since the man has been living alone following the death of his mother two years ago. “She come first and when I come I see she deh run out the yard and she say Vick fall down in the kitchen and she see blood so I come and them neighbours come with me and I shaking he and he cold.”
A detective who resides in the deceased’s street was then informed after which the police were called.
Seubarran was discovered with a stab wound in his upper back, his brother relayed. According to information gathered, the blade of the murder weapon – a knife from the victim’s kitchen – was left stuck in his back as the handle apparently broke off during the attack.
A resident of the area told Stabroek News that Seubarran returned home around 3 pm on Sunday. It was then that she last saw the man she described as always being a “quiet person.”
The brother noted that he was at the house around 5 pm on Sunday with Seubarran who was cooking at that time.
“Only on Sundays he does be home so I was here, then when cricket start I left he and say I going home and watch cricket and I left he watching cricket.”
The man added that the same clothing he left his brother in on Sunday afternoon is the same clothing he was discovered wearing yesterday morning.
According to a resident from the area, for several months now she noticed that a security guard was no longer at the location. However, the deceased’s brother explained that the security attached to his brother’s house proceeded on leave overseas for a month.
“We get dogs here so we had to get someone familiar with them so the fellow that does work gone overseas for leave so we didn’t bring anybody else”, Dean Seubarran said.
After investigators left the crime scene yesterday the family allowed reporters to have a first-hand look before it was cleaned. It was observed that Seubarran collapsed directly in front of the kitchen sink. The nightstand drawers in his bedroom on the lower flat next to the kitchen were ransacked while the mirror on his wardrobe was shattered suggesting that there was some sort of struggle between the victim and perpetrator(s) during the attack.
As of yesterday afternoon, police were continuing their investigation.
Seubarran, President of the Port Mourant Cricket Club, was known throughout the region as a kind person who would often make donations to nonprofit organizations, health and police facilities and the less fortunate.
