The body of a mason was yesterday found lying along the La Penitence Public Road with several chop wounds.
Dead is 33-year-old Rodwell Philips also known as ‘Fishie’ of Broad Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that enquiries have so far disclosed that the murder occurred between 00:30 hrs to 01:00 hrs yesterday.
The scene was visited and processed by investigators and a cutlass which is suspected to be the murder weapon was seen next to the dead man’s body. One chop wound was seen to the centre of his chest, one chop wound to the right side of his face, one chop wound to the left side of his back and one chop wound to his left foot.
Philips was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor who is attached to the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) section of the Central Fire Station. His body was then escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home where it currently awaits a post-mortem examination.
Philips’ mother, Seemouan Philips yesterday told Stabroek News that at about 1:00 am yesterday she received a call and was told that her son was lying on the road with chop wounds about his body.
“I got a call like around one this morning and I heard that my son died and was left on the road there and they seh that he get chap up or something and he leff lying down on the road there.”
The grieving mother went on to say that she last saw her son at about 5 pm on Sunday. “He leave here like five o’clock yesterday afternoon and said he going right down the road deh (whilst pointing to a street) by he friend and I didn’t see him back because I wasn’t at home, I leff and I go out, so is a phone call I get and I heard that he lying out there.”
The dead man’s mother described her son as a loving and calm individual and noted that he would only intervene in matters that concerned him.
“I would say that my son is a very nice person, he would only get annoyed if anybody trouble he but otherwise than duh he is a very cool person.”
It was said that several persons around the area were questioned and CCTV cameras are still to be reviewed. (Aviso Paul)
