Contending that table-ready sugar is being produced at all three estates, the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) yesterday said there is no shortage of the sweetener in the country.
In an advertisement in the Stabroek News, GuySuCo said that as of July 21st, the New Guyana Marketing Corporation has been selling packaged sugar directly to final consumers at $150 per pound and $140 per pound for loose sugar in a bid to prevent profiteering by unscrupulous parties.
As of July 28, GuySuCo said that there was over two weeks’ supply of 50 kg bagged sugar and 2 kg packaged sugar in stock at all three grinding estates.
Further, the Albion Estate began the bagging of sugar six days ago and it has an adequate amount in the bulk bins to produce over 8,000 bags and this is set to jump by 100% in the next five days.
GuySuCo said that the New GMC is helming the market penetration strategy by selling directly to consumers at approximately 20 locations – mainly markets.
The corporation added that that plan has stabilized the final prices for consumers and brought an end to hoarding.
“This plan will continue until the `sugar profiteers’ understand that as one team (GuySuCo and New GMC), we will not allow the final consumers to be exploited”, the corporation said.
