A 19-year-old mason will now spend the next six days behind bars after he was remanded on the charge of armed robbery.
Shawn Collins Savest of Lot 38 Russell Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where the charge was read to him.
It is alleged that Savest, on July 31, at the Kitty Seawall, while in the company of others, and while being armed with an offensive weapon, that is to say a knife, robbed Sabaronie Magadai of one cellphone valued $80,000.
Savest pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded until August 10th, 2022.
According to the facts presented to the court, on the day in question, at about 23:00 hrs, the virtual complainant and his friends were liming on the seawall when the defendant approached him and asked him for $1,000.
Magadai refused to give Savest the money and as a result, the defendant withdrew a knife from his pants and pointed it towards Magadai. Savest was immediately joined by four other suspects and they robbed the complainant of his phone and subsequently escaped.
A police patrol that was in the area was summoned and informed of the incident.
A search was immediately launched and shortly afterward Savest was spotted and pointed out to the ranks by the virtual complainant. Savest then began to run in a bid to escape while throwing the stolen cellphone amongst some rocks where it was retrieved. The man was eventually apprehended and informed of the offence committed, cautioned, and arrested.
