Christopher Griffith, Guyana’s lone cyclist at these XXII Commonwealth Games, will saddle up today with aspirations of making the Golden Arrowhead proud.
Griffith, who is making his debut at the quadrennial fixture currently underway here in Birmingham, England, is down to contest the 37km Time Trial today.
His coach on the sojourn, Englishman, Shaun Green, told this publication the course will be challenging, but his charge is eager to don the national colours and do his best.
“It is not particularly a standard time trial course, it will be challenging” said Green yesterday.
“Chris’ hope for the race is to give a good performance ahead of the road race on Sunday, get his name on the score sheet so that he can fly the flag for Guyana and just have a good day out with lots of the big pros who race in events like the Tour De France,” Green added
Today’s Time Trial is set to commence with a total of 83 competitors – 36 women and 57 men – leaving Wolverhampton’s West Park between 10am and 2.30pm in the first cycling road event of Birmingham 2022. From there, they will race around the streets of Wolverhampton, Dudley and South Staffs before returning to the point of departure.
Each rider sets off one minute apart, allowing them to fully focus on achieving their fastest possible time without trying to one-up their competitors’ position or hit traffic.
According to the entry list, Griffith will depart at 2:03pm, a minute after Mark Lett of Gibraltar and a minute before Mario Ernesta of the Seychelles.
