Literary arts, particularly poetry, may have faded into oblivion

Dear Editor,

In my early years, I was visited by a young man, now deceased, who asked me to guide him in publishing a long poem. His name was Gowkarran Ramdial and was employed as a cane harvester. I wrote an introduction to the booklet titled “Shackles of Colonialism” and with the assistance of the late Sheik Sadeek, the poem was self-published.

The late Dr. A.J. Seymour, to whom I gave a copy of the published piece was impressed and gave it a fairly lengthy review in the book “A Short History of Guyanese Literature”. It is sad that this effort has faded into oblivion.

I think of the late Cleveland Hamilton who presented our bookshelf with a compilation of his poems “As I was Singing.”  This poet enriched my life with his poem “I Love You, Woman” among the beautiful others. Sadly he too has faded into oblivion.

Sincerely,

Krishna Nand Prasad
