East Canje Berbice man, Suraj Ganpat who is accused of murdering his estranged wife, Cindy Ramchandar on Monday morning was yesterday reported to have confessed to a relative of the deceased.
Ramchandar, 24, of Lot 134, Number 47 Village, Corentyne, was stabbed four times about her body. A post-mortem examination performed yesterday gave her cause of death as haemorrhaging due to multiple stab wounds.
A police source yesterday told Stabroek News that they were continuing the hunt for the suspect who left his motorcar in the East Canje Berbice area and fled following the killing.
Ramchandar’s aunt, Anita Thirbhowan yesterday relayed that on Monday evening a relative decided to phone Ganpat under the pretext that he (the relative) did not know what had transpired. According to the aunt, the relative was pretending “to be nice so he can talk where he deh”.
Based on the conversation which was recorded, Ganpat said he committed the act after receiving certain information about his wife. He said that a relative of Ramchandar also provided information on where she would be on the day that she was stabbed to death.
Thirbhowan yesterday called for police to possibly file charges against the the person who had provided information on the victim’s whereabouts. “We need justice, we need police to find him and we need one police to go and hold her. She set up Cindy and make she get killed”, the devastated aunt said.
The couple was married one year ago and were living at the suspect’s parents’ house in East Canje. However, two months ago, Ramchandar decided to separate from the man after she informed her mother that she was facing hard times and abuse at the hands of her husband.
Thirbhowan on Monday stated that Ramchandar’s mother, who resides overseas, supported her daughter to move out from her in-laws and return to the family house in Number 47 Village, Corentyne to stay with her younger sister.
The woman relayed that initially, Ramchandar was not very fearful of the man until he launched his first knife attack two months ago causing her to bar the attack with her hand and leaving her with cuts.
Ramchandar’s father, Mahendra Ramchandar, 55, yesterday expressed his dissatisfaction with the way in which police handled the report of that matter. The man strongly believes that if police had quickly placed the suspect under arrest then he would not have escaped to “ship and come back fa kill she.”
According to the man after the first incident he accompanied his daughter to the Number 51 Police Station where a report was filed and a statement was taken from Ramchandar.
A source when contacted yesterday at the Number 51 Police Station said that the information was forwarded to the New Amsterdam Police Station. However, no arrest was made in the matter.
The father yesterday noted, “Them na move quickly and he had time to get away and go ship to work and he does work month to month so now he come back and he kill she.”
He said “I want justice for my daughter.”
