The file on the Mandela Avenue accident which claimed the life of 42-year-old Odessia Sam and has since left her friend Wendel Oudkerk bedridden, is scheduled to be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice today.
According to the Guyana Police Force’s Deputy Director of the Corporate Communications Unit, Stan Gouveia, Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Ramesh Ashram has said that the survivor is still bedridden and that the investigation is still open. As such, the file is expected to be sent to the DPP for advice.
The now deceased Sam who resided at Lot 170 Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, and Oudkerk of Lot 65 Lamaha Springs, Georgetown, were involved in an accident which occurred on June 29 along Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
The duo was struck down by a SUV, PSS 7007, which was being driven by 41-year-old Nadia Mohamed of Houston Gardens, Georgetown.
The police had reported that the SUV was proceeding west on Mandela Avenue, while the motorcycle, CH 1099, which Sam and Oudkerk were riding, was heading north along Critchlow Avenue, South Ruimveldt Gardens.
According to police, Oudkerk had failed to stop at the junction of Mandela and Critchlow Avenue and proceeded to cross the road. He was reportedly attempting to get over to the northern carriageway by using an opening in the median.
As such, Oudkerk’s failure to stop resulted in the collision between his motorcycle and the SUV. As a result of the collision, both Oudkerk and Sam were flung from the motorcycle onto the road where they sustained injuries about their bodies.
Oudkerk was picked up in a semi-conscious state by emergency medical technicians, and transported via ambulance to the Georgetown Public Hospital, while Sam was placed in a police vehicle and taken to the same hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
One day after the accident, Mohamed was released on $100,000 bail.
