A Venezuelan national was on Monday morning crushed to death by a motor lorry along the Sarah Johanna Public Road on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).
Dead is 35-year-old Francisco Simosa of Sarah Johanna Village, EBD, while the driver of the truck bearing registration number GYY 6047, has been identified as 32-year-old Shamby Yamat also of Sarah Johanna, EBD.
A Guyana Police Force statement informed that according to enquiries, the pedestrian, Simosa, was standing facing north on the eastern parapet on the Sarah Johanna Public Road, while the motor lorry was proceeding south along the eastern side of the same road. The motor lorry then drove past Simosa, stopped and reversed. It hit the man in the process and ran over him.
Simosa was picked up in an unconscious state by the police and public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body was subsequently transported to Carmen’s Funeral Home at Little Diamond, EBD for a post-mortem examination.
The police noted that a Breathalyzer test was conducted on Yamat but no trace of alcohol was found in his system. However, he remains in custody and is assisting with further investigations.
In a video which has surfaced on social media, the crushed body of Simosa could be seen lying along the Sarah Johanna Public Road clad in a black long-sleeved shirt and a grey trousers.
Apparently, prior to being run over, Simosa was trying to make the driver aware that he was behind the lorry but his warnings went unnoticed.
