A Sophia woman was fatally stabbed by a neighbour on Monday evening over an argument that erupted during the course of last week. Two suspects are currently in police custody.
The dead woman has been identified as 22-year-old Vanessa Anderson, of ‘B’ Field, Sophia Squatting Dam, Greater Georgetown.
According to a police statement, the incident occurred at about 18:30 hours in the street in front of Anderson’s home, and involved a 20-year-old female and her 29-year-old sister, both of whom reside in the same street.
Investigations have so far revealed that the victim and the suspects were neighbours and had an ongoing issue. The neighbours would oftentimes accuse the now dead woman of summoning the police to search their home.
The issue came to a head on the day in question when as the victim was in front of her yard, she was approached by the two suspects and an argument then ensued.
During the course of the argument, the 20-year-old suspect collected a knife from her elder sister and dealt Anderson two stabs – one to the upper left side of her back and the other to the left shoulder – resulting in Anderson stumbling back into her yard where she eventually collapsed.
The victim was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body is presently at the GPH mortuary where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
According to the police, the two suspects subsequently turned themselves in at the Turkeyen Police Station along with the murder weapon.
One of the dead woman’s cousins, Shavella Moses, yesterday told Stabroek News that the attack stemmed from a break-and-enter incident.
“Well according to what I heard they had an incident last week with the girls and Vanessa, well the incident was a break and enter at the furniture store in the next street and like he [the owner of the furniture store] took the police over at the girls’ house and Vanessa and her sisters them was on the landing sitting and Vanessa six-year-old daughter came to her aunty and told her that the police is next door so they get up now to look through the window to see wuh going on and the girls now after spotting Vanessa and she sisters looking over they decided to start cussing them… anyway the story come and it done there”, the cousin said.
Moses went on to say that another argument ensued between the women on Monday and it was then when the attack was launched by the sisters.
“It stem again back yesterday [Monday], so Vanessa and the girls them had another argument it wasn’t no fight, they were arguing and cussing one another and stuff, duh was all, but duh police incident is wuh occurred and wuh start the whole story.”
The dead woman’s cousin added that after the stabbing, the woman believed to have inflicted the fatal stabs turned herself in at the Turkeyen Police Station without realising how serious the injuries were, requesting for the matter to be heard in court.
“Well the one that stab Vanessa she run to the station because like she thought was just a bore she give Vanessa but is twice she bore her… so maybe she thinking is just a normal bore she give she so she run to the station and tell the police that how she want court story but she didn’t realize is kill she kill Vanessa.”
“So then Vanessa eldest sister grab the next sister [second suspect] and took her to the station and that was it,” said Moses.
Anderson was the youngest of four siblings and leaves to mourn three children, an eleven-month old baby, a 3-year-old and 6-year-old.
The elder sister of the deceased, Alicia Anderson, described her sister as a very loving and affectionate individual who always spoke the truth.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed today.
The two suspects are said to be currently in custody at the Alberttown Police Station.
