The Guyana Men and Women’s team defeated Burundi and Timor-Leste respectively in Round 10 of the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad at the Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort and Convention Centre, Chennai, India.
This was confirmed by a release from the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF). The Men’s team consisted of Candidate Master (CM) Taffin Khan, FIDE Master Anthony Drayton, Loris Nathoo, and Ethan Lee, who tallied 2.5 against Burundi’s 1.5 points to win the round.
Drayton defeated Joe Rukundo, while CM Khan drew with Dieudonne Muheto (1830), Nathoo played to a stalemate with Hugues Mutabazi (1666), while Lee and Havyarimana Elvis (1724) failed to be separated.
In the Women’s section, the team of Anaya Lall, Jessica Callender, Sasha Shariff, and Pooja Lam, scored 2.5 points to their opponent’s 1.5 points.
Lam, whose rating is 1163, scored her second win of the tournament, defeating Zulmira Tilman (1255). Callender also defeated Maria do Céu Gusmao (1442) while Lall and Shariff drew their respective matches.
Young Anaya Lall missed her chance at winning against her Timor-Leste counterpart, Elfiana Dos Santos (1560), and instead drew her game earning her a half-point.
In the final round which will be played on August 9, the Open team members, Taffin Khan, Anthony Drayton, Loris Nathoo, and Ethan Lee, will take on Haiti, while the Women, Pooja Lam, Jessica Callender, Sasha Shariff, and Anaya Lall, will battle against Libya.
The 44th Chess Olympiad was organised by FIDE, the All India Chess Federation (AICF), and the Tamil Nadu Government of India.
