It is not only the boxers who are whipping themselves into shape ahead of the Winfield Braithwaite School Boys and Juniors Tournament scheduled for August 26 to 28 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
A refresher course is planned for Saturday for the referees/judges officiating the event “in order to get in shape for the tournament.”
So said President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle.
Ninvalle told this publication yesterday that a virtual refresher course will be conducted by Ray Silvas of the USA from noon to 15:00hrs and will involve all the officials within the region.
“It’s very important that we have a refresher course,” posited Ninvalle who added, “Rules are changing constantly and we are now coming out of Covid induced inactivity and many of the officials have not had time to refresh.”
Ninvalle stated that Silvas, a former Chairman of the AIBA Referee/Judges Commission, is highly decorated, respected, and knowledgeable, and is the perfect man for the job. Guyana has shortlisted 30 pugilists ahead of the tournament set to attract boxers from around the Caribbean.
“We have confirmation from Trinidad, The Bahamas and St. Lucia and we expect Saint Maarten and Grenada also to be a part,” Ninvalle was quoted as saying.”
