A homeless man was on Friday sentenced to a six-month stay in jail after he pleaded guilty to having cocaine in his possession.
Tony Singh, 29, who had no fixed place of abode, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in a Georgetown court, where the charge was read to him.
He admitted that on August 10, at Bourda Street, he had 3.9 grammes of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
While Singh pleaded guilty was fined $30,000 or six months imprisonment, he opted to serve the sentence. The defendant told the court that he “smoked” the cocaine and the magistrate ordered him to undergo rehabilitation as a result.
A statement from the Guyana Police Force had stated that on the day in question, a search was carried out on the man and a cigarette pack which contained a quantity of whitish rock-like substance was found in his pants crotch. As a result, Singh was escorted to the Alberttown Police Station, along with the suspected narcotics.
