A youth was on Friday charged with sexually assaulting a woman in an attack at her friend’s house, where she decided to sleepover after a house party.
The charge against 25-year-old Deqwan Norton states that on August 7, 2022, at D’Urban Backlands, he sexually penetrated the 29-year-old woman without her consent.
Norton, a labourer, was not required to plead to the charge, which was heard in camera and he was remanded to prison until August 26, 2022.
According to prosecution’s case, the 29-year-old woman was at her friend’s house party and she decided to stay over due to it being late.
She then proceeded to her friend’s bedroom, where she went to sleep. However, she was later awakened by the feeling of someone—allegedly Norton— touching her about her body. The man then allegedly held the woman down and sexually assaulted her.
The victim immediately raised an alarm and persons who were in the house went to her rescue. It was also alleged that the accused tried to escape but was eventually apprehended and beaten and was later handed over to the police.
The prosecution noted that the victim had positively identified Norton as her assailant.
