The Commonwealth Games, staged from July 29 to August 8, were hosted in England for the third time ever.
It was the first time the Games, which began in 1930, were held in Birmingham, the second largest city in the United Kingdom.
Athletes and Events
72 countries participated in the 22nd edition of the event.
More than 5,000 athletes competed.
For the first time in a global, multi-sport event, there were more women’s events than men’s events.
The Birmingham games had the most events for women and athletes with disabilities in the history of the games.
The 2022 edition of the Commonwealth Games featured 283 different medal events across a wide range of disciplines, including popular track and field events, weightlifting and martial arts, such as boxing and judo.
Cost
• £72 million was spent over two years to update and improve the flagship Alexander Stadium, which hosted the popular athletics events.
• A new state-of-the-art aquatics centre was built in Sandwell for the games, costing £73 million.
• The 2022 games were the most expensive sporting event in the UK since the London Olympics, at an estimated £778 million (the Olympics cost £8.8 billion).
Venues
The 2022 Commonwealth games were held across 15 venues in and around the city of Birmingham.
• The extensively updated Alexander Stadium hosted the track and field athletics events.
• The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) showcased the boxing, badminton, judo, table tennis, weightlifting and para powerlifting events
• Artistic and rhythmic gymnastics took place at Arena Birmingham.
• The University of Birmingham hosted squash and hockey on new courts and pitches.
• Athletes and officials stayed at the University of Birmingham, the University of Warwick, and the NEC hotel.
• New cycling facilities were opened in the Cannock Chase forest, which was used for the mountain bike competition in the games.
• The total investment in the tracks at Cannock Chase was around £900,000.
Medal Count
• While Guyana failed to medal at the quadrennial event, future host Australia topped the medal table with 67 gold medals.
• The hosts finished second with 57 gold medals, while Canada placed third with 26.
Guyana was represented by 32 athletes from the disciplines of athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, swimming, squash and tennis.
