Recognising that diabetes remains one of the country’s most common diseases, the Davis Memorial Hospital with support from the Guyana Metropolitan Relief Organisation (GUYMETRO) recently launched a diabetic clinic.
A release from the hospital said that clinic, which was launched on July 31st, is also supported by other local and international organisations.
The clinic and a support group will meet once a month and members of the group who will benefit from the free services, such as glucose testing, diabetic education, nutritional classes and massage therapy. Nutritional meals for diabetics will also be served and patients will be screened and examined by the attending physician. Registration to join ends on August 31.
The hospital explained that type 2 diabetes is an increasingly common disease of western society and Guyana is no exception.
“One of the problems with diabetes is that in the early stages there will be few if any symptoms. This, however, does not mean that damage is not happening to the patient and over time diabetes can significantly increase the risk of having a stroke and heart attack, as well as damaging nerves, kidneys and eyes,” the release warned.
Those in attendance of the launching included Dr Davina Ramsingh-Parsram from the Ministry of Health’s Chronic Diseases Unit, Dr. Alexis Reid, President of the Diabetic Association Our Foot Care Clinic, Yonnette Semple-Domer, of GUYMETRO, and Beverly Brathwaite-Chan, CEO of the hospital.
