Six women from Region Two who competed under the label “Cinderella Duck Curry” won the judges’ hearts at the Kings Jewellery Duck Curry Competition yesterday at Capoey Lake, Essequibo Coast.
The group of women copped first place taking home $200,000 cash and a trophy.
The scored 240.8 points.
Coming in second in the regional competition was Julian Hilltop Crew from Capoey. That crew received 236 points and won $100,000 at the competition. The main cooks were Julian Spellen and Evelyn Fredericks. They were very excited to enter the competition and knew that they had the potential to win. They were confident that their spices would captivate the judges.
The Jaguar crew won 3rd place and uplifted $50,000 while Tang’s Duck Curry clinched the 4th place with $30,000. The fifth place was won by the GPL duck curry group. The winners have won a place in the final.
This year’s competition attracted 24 chefs from throughout Region Two. The competition was organized by Kings in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Many families gathered at the lake for the contest.
The crowd was entertained by chutney artiste Vanita Willie.
A representative from the Kings duck curry committee, Shameer Shahib used the opportunity to congratulate all those who participated. Shahib said that most of the duck curry winners in the past were from Essequibo and he was anxious about this year’s competition. He said the competition coincides with the upcoming cricket carnival. He also said that Kings Jewellery is a proud sponsor and feels delighted to bring families together.
Future competitions will be on August 21 at Port Mourant, Berbice; September 4 at Georgetown at the National Stadium and the finals will be help on September 23 at Leonora.
