The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Saturday said it is saddened by the sudden death of Bibi Safora Shadick, a longstanding member of the Commission.
“This is extremely shocking since she actively participated as usual at the meetings of the Commission as recent as Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. As a Commissioner at GECOM, Bibi Shadick’s efforts were consistently focused on the efficient management of registration and election projects as constitutionally mandated, enacted in the legislation as well as international best practices. Her principled position was to ensure that there was compliance with fiscal and administrative procedures.
Commissioner Shadick’s tenacity of purpose was an ever-present feature during deliberations at the level of the Commission on matters of importance. Her contributions were always meaningful”, GECOM said.
Meanwhile, the University of Guyana on Saturday said it was saddened and shocked at the sudden passing of the former Pro-Chancellor and Councilwoman of the University of Guyana.
In a statement, UG noted that Shadick served the University for over 10 years on various iterations of its Council. She left the Council in 2017 when her last term came to its end. UG said that. Shadick was known as one of the most forthright and fearless members of the Council while she served. It added that she was also possessed of an incisive mind and a matchless wit.
“Ms. Shadick was an unorthodox force of nature, whose sharp tongue and intelligent wit masked a deeply compassionate and warm heart.” Vice-Chancellor Paloma Mohamed has said of her.
“I was fortunate to have known her for the greater part of my life, as a young student in high school and later as a representative on UG’s Council. Though she was not still on the Council when I became Vice-Chancellor, she was the first person to call and to express her joy at my appointment. Thereafter she never stopped reaching out warmly. We knew she really wished us well. We are so very saddened that she is gone”, Mohamed said.
Shadick died at her home on Saturday morning. She was 76. She was laid to rest yesterday.
