Rehabilitation work at the historic City Hall in Georgetown is proceeding according to plan says Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentore.
In an interview with Stabroek News on Thursday, Mentore said that work on the building is moving according to plan despite shipment delays. He noted that construction on the City Hall building is technical since the aim is to maintain the architecture of the building.
Further, due to COVID-19 strictures, Trinidadian construction company, Fides Ltd, is experiencing delays in importing building materials. It was also mentioned that the delay is unlikely to halt ongoing reconstruction however, it will be a factor until the materials arrive. When ask about the timeframe for completion, Mentore stated that it might be a little over the estimated time due to shipment delays.
Ramnarace Somar, one of the project managers, had told this newspaper in January of this year that the company wished to complete the construction within 12 months although they were initially given an 18-month time frame.
In September last year, a contract worth $780 million for the restoration of the building was signed with Fides Ltd. The rehabilitation is being funded by the Government of Guyana.
