Police in Region Eight are on the hunt for a man who was involved in a shooting on Friday afternoon which led to the death of a Venezuelan woman and left another person injured.
The dead woman has been identified as 28-year-old Rosemari Torres also called “Mary”, of Caracas, Venezuela. The injured woman has been identified as Elianny Perozo.
Torres was shot while in hiding from her friend’s boyfriend who opened fire on them after he was confronted for his disorderly behaviour earlier in the night.
According to the police, Torres, her sister and three others were drinking at a shop at the landing. At the time, police said the suspect, who operates a mining operation at Mowasi Backdam, Konawaruk and a small shop was involved in a heated argument with his girlfriend.
Aware of the situation, Torres and a man from their group spoke to the suspect about his behaviour and told him to calm down.
This did not sit well with the suspect and he instructed Torres and her friend not to intervene in his business.
However, Torres did not back down and an argument ensued between her and the suspect.
At the time, police said, Torres was armed with a cutlass and began firing chops at the suspect but missed.
Retaliating, the suspect began pelting bricks at Torres and others.
According to police report, the group ran away from the suspect and hid in some bushes approximately 250 metres away from the landing. But the suspect, now armed with a gun, hopped on his motorcycle. The suspect then discharged three shots. As a result, Torres and another woman who was also hiding sustained injuries. Eyewitnesses told the police that after Torres sustained the gunshot wound she fell on her back and became motionless.
The injured woman managed to alert the man who was with them and they summoned the police. The suspect however managed to flee the area.
Upon arrival at the scene, police said it was processed for forensics and Torres’ body was discovered with two small circular wounds on her left side and her left thigh. The injured woman was taken to the Mahdia Hospital for medical treatment and was admitted.
