An 18-year-old died on Monday after he was stabbed by his drinking partner at a bar.
Dead is Donald Gibson of Lot 7 Hyde Park, Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE). The suspect who is in police custody has been identified as a 24-year-old man.
According to a police report, the incident occurred on Monday at about 17:30hrs at the façade of a liquor restaurant in Parika.
Enquiries into the fatal stabbing revealed that on the day in question, Gibson and the 24-year-old suspect were at the bar when Gibson accused the man of assaulting his friend sometime in the past, as such an argument then ensued. It was alleged that Gibson physically assaulted the suspect and then got up to leave the bar. As Gibson was leaving the bar, he was accosted by the suspect and there was a scuffle.
The suspect who was armed with a knife dealt Gibson a stab under his left arm. Following the stabbing, Gibson’s friend who has been identified as 19-year-old Wazim Mohamed, rushed to part the fight.
The police said that the suspect also stabbed Mohamed in his back and buttocks before the fight was quelled by public-spirited citizens. According to reports, the suspect rushed to a nearby trench where he threw the knife.
The Police were summoned to the scene and Gibson and Mohamed were escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where it was said that Gibson died while receiving medical attention. Mohamed was treated and admitted as a patient at the hospital.
The suspect was then arrested and placed in custody.
