Local management consultancy firm, GPSM Consul-tants Inc, on Tuesday August 2, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Trinidad and Tobago Chapter of the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) under which the two entities will jointly deliver a number of courses in disciplines that will equip participants with skills that can be applied in both the energy and non-energy sectors in Guyana.
The agreement, signed by the two entities at the GPSM’s North Road, Georgetown offices, em-braces disciplines that include marine and land transportation, water management and transportation, food and beverage processing and packaging, power generation and distribution, water management and distribution, and mining and minerals.
Under the agreement with the Government Technical Institute (GTI), the local technical institution will provide both lecturers and teaching tools.
Upon completion of the programmes that will be executed under the agreements, participants will be better-placed to apply for various offshore and on-shore-related positions in the substantive oil and gas sector and in the various support sub-sectors.
Tuition will be delivered by various SMRP specialists and the programmes which are globally recognized, are ISO/ ANSI certified.
In pursuit of the effective execution of the training exercises, the GPSM has also signed an agreement with GTI under which the resources of the local training institution including its classrooms, lecturers and technical inventory will be placed at the disposal of the training programmes.
GPSM says that the agreement with GTI, which also embraces health and safety training attended by accredited certification, underscores the commitment of the two parties to the realisation of meaningful collaboration in support of learning in technical and vocational disciplines that are relevant to skills enhancement in the oil and gas, mining, and other sectors.
Following the signing of the MoU, the representatives of the GPSM and SMRP benefitted from a tour of the GTI complex during which discourses ensued in the matter of how best the facilities of the GTI could be used to maximise the effect of the forthcoming training exercise.
The agreement between GPSM and GTI extends to the offer of one scholarship, annually, to students from the GTI in any of the disciplines being offered by GPSM and SMRP.
GPSM Chief Executive Officer Peter Benny told Stabroek Business that the agency is seeking to devise training programmes relevant to providing skills that can be utilised in the broadest range of sectors that Guyana needs in this phase of its development.
