Caribbean entrepreneurs interested in expanding their existing businesses are being invited to apply for grants that are currently available through a programme jointly funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Department for International Development (DFID) in the United Kingdom, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
‘Compete Caribbean’, a five-year Caribbean private sector development programme, is targeting fifteen Caribbean countries and Caribbean-based firms that can benefit from non-repayable grants ranging from US$100,000 to US$500,000.
To become eligible for a grant, projects must be both innovative and commercially viable and selections will be based on a competitive bidding process. Firms must present a project idea that meets the challenge advertised. Only the best project ideas will be selected.
An official disclosure on the programme says that it is “a new and innovative approach to private sector development that collaborates with governments and private sector groups across the region to improve the competitiveness and economic growth in the fifteen countries.” The programme, the disclosure declares, seeks to help governments structure and coordinate their support framework for private sector development, update and create knowledge, and directly help firms and clusters innovate and grow.
