The new Guyana Fire Service (GFS) Head-quarters along Home-stretch Avenue will be completed ahead of schedule during the early part of next year, according to Fire Chief (ag) Gregory Wickham.
Providing an update on Tuesday, WicKham said to date seventy per cent of the construction of the building has been completed and works are expected to conclude in February next year.
A decision has not yet been taken as to what will happen to the building which currently houses the GFS’ headquarters in the congested Stabroek Market Square. The heavy traffic in the area often negatively affects the fire service’s response time.
In January last year, the Ministry of Home Affairs had unveiled the plan for the construction of the new headquarters, which is being built west of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Homestretch Avenue and next to the proposed Guyana Football Federation complex.
The project was pegged at $648 million.
