Shimron Hetmyer has been promoted to captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the upcoming Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
This was confirmed today by the franchise which pointed out that the explosive left-hander has been with the side since 2016 and featured in 47 matches with one century and right 50-plus scores under his belt.
The 25-year-old has tasted captaincy before, leading West Indies to their first Youth World Cup title.
Speaking on his appointment, Hetmyer remarked, “I’m really happy to be appointed captain of my country franchise, I’m excited to lead this group of men! I can’t wait for the CPL to begin.”
Head Coach of the franchise, Rayon Griffith, welcomed Hetmyer’s appointment and said that he was happy to see him get the opportunity to captain a senior franchise.
Chairman of the Guyana Amazon Warriors franchise, Dr Bobby Ramroop stated, “We are pleased to appoint our first Guyanese captain since the 2013 season. Hetmyer has been a main part of our set up over the years and we believe the time is right to have him lead the team.”
Warriors, who have reached five finals and are in pursuit of their maiden title, will begin the tournament in St Kitts before moving on to St Lucia and Trinidad respectively. The team will play the final leg of the tournament at home in four matches with a chance to reach a sixth final, this time, on home soil.
