A 32-year-old man died early yesterday morning after he crashed his car into a truck along the Rupert Craig Highway.
Dead is Stephon Stewart, of Charles Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the fatal accident, which occurred around 03.10 hrs.
At the time, Stewart was the driver of a car, PRR 7135.
He reportedly crashed into the truck, GAC 1297, while it was removing another car, PKK 9331, from a nearby trench.
A GPF statement said enquiries disclosed that PKK 9331, driven by Adrian Montrose of One Mile, Wismar, Linden, was proceeding west along the southern lane of Rupert Craig Highway when a truck, which was proceeding in the northern direction of the road swerved into the path of his vehicle.
As a result, Montrose told the police that he swerved to avoid a collision, lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a nearby trench.
Later, GAC 1297, which was being operated by Richard MacDonald, of Section ‘B’ Nonpareil, East Coast Demerara, was in the process of removing Montrose’s car from the trench, when Stewart crashed into the rear of the vehicle.
The police said MacDonald had his hazard lights on at the time.
Following the collision, Stewart was seen motionless and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Montrose and MacDonald are currently in police custody assisting with the investigation, the police added.
