President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), and architect of the Caribbean School Boys and Junior tournament, Steve Ninvalle, has informed that the overseas contingent of competing nations will begin to arrive on local shores from today, ahead of the event’s Friday commencement.

This was disclosed during a brief interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday. According to Ninvalle, “The foreign contingent will start arriving from tomorrow [today], and that includes Trinidad and Tobago, the Bahamas, and St. Lucia. All systems are in place to welcome them and have a tremendous tournament. We will be having the medical and official weigh-ins on Thursday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. The first fight will be at 6pm on Friday evening.”

The prestigious championship will be staged from August 24 to 29 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown. The GBA has selected a 17-member squad from an initial pool of 30 to represent Guyana at the competition. They are, Shawn Sabola, Matthew Thomas, Travis Sancho, Joshua Thambaran, Arlington Johnson, Jahuan Haniff, Markel Blue, Garvel Hyman, Malachi Greenidge, Tequan Sampson, Seon Graham, Shaquan James, Dwane Baptiste, Eon Bancroft Jnr, Kendel Dominic, Jeremiah Duncan, and Yusdiel Gala.

“The team has been encamped, they have been tested for COVID-19 and are all safe. We have the most formidable coaching staff supervising and managing the squad. They are led by national coach, Lennox Daniels, and includes Terrence Poole and Sebert Blake, who are also 3-star coaches. There is also Francisco Roldan, Clifton Moore and Gregory Cort. We have also received considerable support from the president of Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool. We have worked closely together during this period,” Ninvalle stated.

Citing the tournament as one of the most important within the Caribbean region, the National Sports Commission (NSC) boss declared that the competition provides the perfect avenue to evaluate the emerging talents of the respective nations.

“It is one of the most if not most important competitions that the Caribbean will have simply because of the fact that it is tailored… and is aimed at developing the nursery of the sport. The nursery of course is your most important.”
