The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) recently concluded a three-day public outreach to Essequibo, Region Two.
A release from the DPP’s Chambers said Senior State Counsel Tiffini Lyken and DPP Communications Officer Liz Rahaman were accompanied by Police Sergeant Monette Boston of the Sexual Offences Unit at the Anna Regina Police Station during the outreach, which saw the team visit the Amerindian communities of Bethany in the Supenaam Creek and Mashabo on August 16, Capoey on August 17, and Saint Denny’s in Tapakuma and Whyaka Mainstay on August 18.
During the outreach meetings, the release said, the DPP’s team engaged residents of the communities on matters of concern relating to police matters, pending court matters, early school dropouts, teenage pregnancy, noise nuisance, and selling of alcohol by shop owners to underage children. “The residents of these remote missions and villages are asking the relevant authorities for police patrols to frequent the areas with some hope of getting relief,” the release noted.
Toshaos and residents, it further said, thanked the DPP’s team for its outreach since it gave them the opportunity to learn and better understand the functions and works of the DPP’s office within the criminal justice system. The DPP’s Office was able to assist those residents with pending legal matters to determine their status and received on the spot complaints about legal matters and police reports that have been pending, the release added.
Meanwhile, similar outreach meetings are planned for Bartica and riverine communities on Thursday and Friday this week.
