The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) yesterday presented a certificate to SS Natural Fruit Flavoured Inc that permits the company to use the Made in Guyana Standards Mark for its fruit flavoured BBQ sauces.
CEO of SS Natural Fruit Flavoured Inc Sandra Craig, said she is pleased that the BBQ sauces have satisfied the standards of the GNBS.
Before SS Natural Fruit Flavoured Inc received accreditation, it had to satisfy certain criteria, such as, be a registered business, provide records of customer feedback, testing of the product(s) at the Government Analyst- Food and Drug Department, provide records of staff training, show proof of citizenship in Guyana, and the raw materials had to be locally sourced.
The Made in Guyana Standards Mark is a registered mark that aims to provide recognition to locally manufactured products for the local and international markets and is a signature of quality for authentic Guyanese products.
Director of Business at the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, John Edghill, in his brief remarks at the presentation, said that when he saw Craig featured in a Stabroek News article, he invited her to discuss the prospect of having the GNBS approve her product to make it more recognisable.
Since 2014, Craig has been ‘jazzing up’ her barbecue sauces with local flavours, pineapple, tamarind, soursop, golden apple, ginger, garlic, passion fruit and mango. She believes that the SS brand having been given a considerable thumbs up on the local market, is now ‘fit and ready’ for the outside world.
The attendees at the ceremony included GNBS Executive Director (Ag), Ramrattie Karan; UK High Commissioner to Guyana, Jane Miller; Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Joslyn McKenzie; and First Vice President of the Guyana Manufacturing & Services Association, Ramsay Ali.
