A Corentyne house which had been leaning to one side for some time collapsed on Thursday evening while an elderly bedridden man and his wife were fast asleep inside.
The bedridden man was trapped underneath the house after the collapse but was eventually rescued by neighbours who rushed over to assist.
According to information gathered, the elderly couple, Natool Madray, 62, and Parbattie Budhoo, also known as ‘Sisto’, 45, had resided together at the Number 64 Village, Corentyne wooden house over the past twenty years. The structure had deteriorated over the years and for several months now had begun leaning to one side.
Kevin Doodnauth, a neighbour, told Stabroek News that about midnight on Thursday he heard a loud crash and upon investigating, saw that the house had collapsed.
Budhoo yesterday explained that she and her husband were fast asleep when the house fell, “Breeze na blow it or so, it just fall down and me wake up and me jump out the window and he been deh bottom.”
After hearing the crash, neighbours quickly rushed over and assisted with removing Boodram from the rubble. Luckily, the couple did not sustain any injuries.
Budhoo explained, that since her husband suffered a stroke many years ago, she has been doing domestic work to maintain the two of them. “Me does work $1,000 a day and take care of he. Me a do everything for he. Me a feed am and clean am and me a gone to work”, she said.
According to Budhoo, they have children together who got married a few years back and relocated to other parts of the country.
Doodnauth yesterday told Stabroek News that he felt obligated to assist the couple until their house is repaired since they do not have any relatives known to them in the area. He stressed that the couple need assistance to rebuild the house, and persons desirous of assisting can contact Doodnauth on telephone number 658-2899.
Another female neighbour pleaded for assistance for the couple also, “She [Budhoo] a work $1,000 a day from morning till night and them really need lil assistance. Sometimes she come by me and me go give she food and things to cook.”
When questioned yesterday Budhoo confirmed that she needs assistance for “things to eat and to mek back one lil house back.”
