The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) says that it has taken note of concerns expressed in relation to the existing Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) but contended that it must be handled in accordance with the law.
GECOM said that while those positions were noted and ventilated at the meetings of the Commission, there is no scope for it to act outside of the law. In a statement yesterday, the elections commission said that it is constrained by the provisions of the National Registration Act (NRA), Chapter 19:08 which dictates the procedures for the registration of eligible persons and likewise the removal of any such persons from the National Register of Registrants Database (NRRDB).
“In this regard, it is not that the concerns of stakeholders in relation to the PLE are being ignored, but GECOM must act within the framework of the Laws of Guyana,” GECOM said.
