Nine young women between the ages of 16 and 25 years old from across the three sub-districts of Region Seven have been selected to vie for the title and crown in the first ever Miss Region Seven Amerindian Heritage Pageant.
The pageant, scheduled for the Bartica Community Centre Ground tomorrow, is being held under the theme ‘Showcasing Our Culture While Embracing Our True Identity’. Speaking to this newspaper last Thursday, Pageant Coordinator Candacy Williams explained that the young women were chosen from each district within the Cuyuni-Mazaruni region and were selected at random by the people of their villages.
“… The three sub-districts… are the Upper Mazaruni, Middle Mazaruni and Lower Mazaruni,” Candacy said. For the Upper Mazaruni, the girls are from the villages of Paruima and Waramadong; Middle Mazaruni, Isseneru and Tassarene, and lower Mazaruni, Batavia, Karrau, Dagg Point, Agatash and Mora Camp.
The nine contestants are Miss Isseneru – Tiffany Kenswil, Miss Mora Camp – Ashley Arthur, Miss Paruima – Sylvany Roberston, Miss Karrau – Kristie Rambharat, Miss Agatash – Felicia Couchman, Miss Batavia – Novita Pawelae, Miss Dagg Point – Lieanna Katriah, Miss Waramadong – Andrea Issacs and Miss Tassarene – Carolina Williams.
During the course of training for the pageant, the young women will be required to take part in an indigenous challenge where they will have to make cassava bread, roast fish and make various Amerindian crafts.
The contestants will compete in five different categories. They will be judged on their introduction which includes a brief background of their village and themselves; talent, where they are expected to perform a piece of art in which they are versed; evening gown, where they will portray any of the minerals found in Guyana on their dresses; and questions based on their individual platforms. From the last segment, the final five contestants will be chosen and will face the intelligence category.
Miss Region Seven Pageant 2022 will win an Amerindian headdress\crown, $150,000 and other prizes. She will also represent Region Seven at the Miss Amerindian Pageant, which is slated for September 14 at a venue in Georgetown vying with all the other young women who were crowned for their respective regions.
