A Berbice man was yesterday unanimously found guilty of two counts of sexual assault against a minor in 2019.
The guilty verdicts came at the High Court in Berbice following a trial before Justice Brassington Reynolds.
Chandralall Lakhraj, also known as ‘Uncle Papi’, 40, was found guilty on both counts of the rape of a child under sixteen years and sexual activity with a minor.
It is alleged that between September 1, 2019 and October 9, 2019, Lakhraj engaged in sexual penetration with an eleven-year-old child.
Based on information gathered, the victim was removed from her parents’ home due to neglect and placed in the care of the accused. It is alleged that the victim would sleep in a hammock and the man on two different evenings committed the crime.
She later relayed what had transpired to her school teacher who contacted the authorities.
Lakhraj, who was represented by attorney at law, Chandra Sohan will return to court on September 13 for sentencing.
