A total of 32 security personnel attached to the Ministry of Education recently benefitted from fire safety training.
The training was conducted on August 21 and 28 at the Central Fire Station, Stabroek, George-town.
In a press release issued yesterday, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said during the training the security workers were educated on evacuation procedures and the use of fire extinguishers by staff of the fire prevention department.
Over the past few months, there have been a number of fires at public schools.
Just last month, a fire ravaged the St. George’s High School leaving hundreds of students displaced. A GFS investigation later found that the fire was electrical in origin.
In June last year, a fire of unknown origin destroyed a section of the North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary. The fire was reported to have started around 1 pm and quickly ripped through a building that housed the Science and Information Technology (IT) labs, the Home Economics Department and a number of classrooms.
Months after, the North West Secondary School in Mabaruma was destroyed by a fire.
The fire which occurred on September 24, 2021 started around 11.15 pm. A security guard attached to the school reported hearing three explosions and seeing smoke and fire emanating from the direction of the Head Teacher’s Office.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was an act of arson.
And, in June this year, a small fire erupted in the Charlestown Secondary School laboratory. The GFS responded and managed to prevent the blaze from spreading.
