Eteringbang in Region Seven is in urgent need of medical supplies and assistance after severe flooding made the community inaccessible.
“At this time, our community needs medical assistance [to help with] these patients. We only had two bottles of fever medicine. [There are] no antibiotics or medication to treat newborn babies,” a resident told Regional Chair-man, Kenneth Williams, in a WhatsApp message.
Williams told Stabroek News that a doctor was unable to travel to the area due to the airstrip being under water. This has made the mining community inaccessible.
As it is now, he said, the region’s doctor is ready to travel to the area as soon as floodwater recedes.
Last weekend, heavy rainfall caused the Cuyuni River to overtop its banks resulting in the flooding of several communities including Eteringbang, Tshau, Carboo, Rock landing and Kaikan in the Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven.
At least 45 households are said to be severely affected in Kaikan and several more in the other communities. The Civil Defence Commission distributed relief supplies to residents of Kaikan on Saturday after floodwaters had receded. However, at that time, floodwater was still rising in Eteringbang.
