The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB)/Albion Community Centre Cricket Club (ACCC) will be hosting its first round of matches in its U19 championship tomorrow, according to an official release.
It further informed that 21 teams will be featured in the tournament, and that the competitors will be divided four sub-zones – West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne, and Upper Corentyne.
The winner of each zone will be awarded a trophy and a cash prize. Similarly, the four group runners-up will join the group winners in an eight-team tournament which will decide the overall champion of the county.
Amongst the teams slated to compete in the tournament are: Albion, Rose Hall Town Pepsi, Port Mourant, Tucber Park, Edinburgh, Rose Hall Canje, Achievers, Cotton Tree, Bath, Bush Lot United, Number 73 Young Warriors, Skeldon, and Number 69.
BCB president, Hilbert Foster, explained that the concept of the tournament, specifically the zonal aspect of the competition, is to inspire the clubs to perform at a high standard while developing quality players.
“The BCB expects the tournament to be very competitive as numerous inter county and national players would be in action including Jonathan Rampersaud, Mahendra Gopilall, Jermey Sandia, Zeymul Ramsammy, Isai Thorne, Sohail Mohamed, Leon Cecil, Ramzan Koobir, Navin Boodwah, Tommani Ceasar, Rampertab Ramnauth and Shiv Harripersaud. The three Rose Hall Canje females who recently represented the West Indies, Ashmini Munisar, Ashley Ramnauth, and Realanna Grimmond, are also expected to play in the tournament,” the release added.
The tournament is being sponsored by Permaul Trading and Distribution Ltd, Arif Mootoo, and Kris Jagdeo Construction Services.
