The suspect in the murder of a man and the wounding of another at Kimbia, Upper Berbice River during the wee hours of Monday has been arrested.
Commander of Region Six, Boodnarine Persaud, when contacted, confirmed that the man was arrested around 1 am yesterday.
According to information gathered, investigators received information that the suspect, who was in hiding, was planning to leave the Berbice River via boat. As such investigators headed into the area and arrested the man while he was leaving on the boat.
He is now being held in New Amsterdam for questioning as the investigation continues.
Selman Khan, 23, of Wiruni, Upper Berbice River was fatally chopped during the 3 am attack on Monday. His nephew Shane Osborne, 18, remains hospitalized at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after one of his wrists was severed. He also sustained a major chop wound to his neck. His condition remains serious.
Osborne’s father, Vanwest Osborne, a Coun-cillor for the Wiruni Village had told Stabroek News, that his son and cousin (Khan) left home to head to nearby Kimbia Village to attend a reception for a wedding on Sunday.
According to the father, who was in New Amster-dam at the time of the attack, he received a message from a boat operator around 3.15 am Monday that his son had been badly injured. “He call and tell me my son hand get chop out and they bringing him out.”
Osborne had said that he then tried to find out exactly what transpired between the attacker and his relatives and was told that late Sunday evening, Khan and Osborne left the reception and headed to a nearby “drinking place.”
After the two men spent some time at that location, there were two other men present who began arguing over the ownership of a cutlass. Osborne said he was told that his son chimed in and said that the cutlass cannot belong to both of them “and my son Shane turn and say ‘you think me is them boys who you does deh slapping up, slapping up’ and the boy (attacker) chuck he (son) up and he (son) fall into the water and then the boy (attacker) start the chopping.”
According to the father, he was told that after his son began screaming, Khan intervened and then he was also brutally chopped.
