W.H.B. Ortwin who was comparatively a newcomer to the then colony, secured the Amateur Golf Championship of British Guiana in 1937 with a total score of 319 points for 72 holes.
Ortwin by consistent practice had placed himself in the forefront of local golfers. J.M. Campbell was the runner-up with a score of 321 points. The first and second rounds of the competition were played on Saturday and Sunday of March 13th and 14th respectively at the Georgetown Golf Club Grounds.
At the conclusion, Ortwin was leading with 158 points. A.G. King and S.C. Smith were tied on 157 points, while J.R. Gill, F. Burnett, T.R. Cowell, and A.D. McGillivray sat on 154, 152, and 149 points apiece. The third and fourth rounds were hosted on the lawns of the Demerara Golf Club on March 20th and 21st. In addition to the championship trophy, other prizes were competed for in connection with the competition. The following is the full list of prize winners.
