During the wee hours of yesterday, lightning struck a small fishing boat in the Corentyne River leaving a Fyrish fisherman missing and two others traumatised
As of yesterday afternoon fisherfolk and the Coast Guard were continuing the search for Hemnarine Chandradeo also known as ‘Ravin’, 28, of Fyrish Village, Corentyne.
Chandradeo, his brother, Navindra Chandradeo, and another fisherman identified as Romel were on the boat at the time of the incident aback of Albion Village in the Corentyne River. The two men were held for questioning at the Albion Police Station yesterday.
Chandradeo’s mother, Kamla Chandradeo told Stabroek News yesterday that Navindra informed her that they were on the boat during the early morning when lightning struck. He said he and his brother were at the back of the boat pulling up their second catch when Hemnarine was struck.
Hemnarine’s hat split in two leaving the impression that he had been struck in the head. According to the mother, Hemnarine pitched over board after he was struck, “and he (Navindra) say he try fa grab he but he fall over and when them search them na find he.”
Hemnarine’s wife, Jameela Cyril, 25, said that her husband along with the two fishermen left home around 10 am on Thursday. She said he informed her that they were going out just for two catches and would return yesterday morning.
The tearful woman said that she is holding out hope that her husband will be found alive. The couple has two daughters ages 6 and 2.
